HURRICANE SCREENS

STORM PROTECTION FOR TAMPA BAY & THE GULF COAST

When a storm is on the way, your windows and doors are the most vulnerable parts of your home. Hurricane screens give you powerful, proven protection — without the hassle of boarding up.

Living along the Gulf Coast means living with the reality of hurricane season. From June through November, every homeowner in the Tampa Bay area faces the same question: how do I protect what matters most? Hurricane screens are one of the smartest investments you can make — here’s why.

Wind & debris protection

Hurricane-force winds can turn everyday objects into dangerous projectiles. Screens rated for high-wind impact absorb and deflect debris that would otherwise shatter glass and breach your home’s envelope.

Deploy in minutes

Unlike plywood or storm shutters that require tools and muscle, hurricane screens roll or fold into place quickly — often by a single person. When a storm track shifts overnight, you’re ready, not scrambling.

Year-round value

Between storms, screens block harsh Florida sun, reduce glare, lower cooling costs, and keep insects out. They’re not just storm prep — they’re a daily quality-of-life upgrade.

Protect your investment

Storm damage to windows, doors, and interiors can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Hurricane screens are a fraction of that cost — and many insurance providers recognize them with premium discounts.

Why Tampa Bay homeowners need to take storms seriously

Tampa Bay sits at a uniquely vulnerable position on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The shallow waters of the bay and the surrounding geography can amplify storm surge, and the region’s long-term history of near-misses has lulled some residents into a false sense of security. Forecasters and emergency managers have noted for years that a direct hit on the Tampa metro area could be catastrophic.

Recent storm seasons have been a stark reminder: it’s not a matter of if, but when. Hurricane screens are one of the most cost-effective ways to make sure your home — and your family — is ready when that day comes.

What makes hurricane screens different from other protection

Not all storm protection is created equal. Here’s how screens compare to traditional options:

No tools, no nails, no trips to a sold-out hardware store — screens install on a permanent track system you set up once
Professionally measured and custom-fitted to your home’s exact openings
Transparent or semi-transparent options maintain natural light and visibility, even when deployed
High-strength woven fabric engineered to meet or exceed Florida Building Code requirements for wind-borne debris
Screens retract out of sight when not in use — no visual impact on your home’s curb appeal
Suitable for windows, doors, lanais, porches, and large openings that are difficult to protect with panels

The peace of mind you can’t put a price on

When a hurricane watch is issued, Tampa Bay residents face a stressful choice: evacuate, shelter in place, or scramble to protect their home. Hurricane screens eliminate one layer of that stress entirely. Knowing your windows and doors are covered – and that your home has every reasonable protection in place – lets you make clearer decisions for your family.

Our team at LYFE™ Outdoor Comfort Solutions serves homeowners across the Tampa Bay area, from Hillsborough and Pinellas counties to the beaches of the Gulf Coast. We measure, fabricate, and install every screen system to fit your home exactly, so when the season gets active, you’re already prepared.

Here is a great example of integrating hurricane screens in the general esthetics of a home that was located in Lutz, FL. The pool deck stone is white, the house of a neutral color. Adding dark hurricane screens, especially with that large surface area, would be changing the vibe of the house. The owners opted for white hurricane screens of the Progressive Screens band. They integrate seamlessly with the house inside the pool cage.

As you can see on the video, the individual motors are remote-controlled, all together or separately. These electric motors are super reliable and pull a lot of torque. The motor of the smaller screen is a bit faster than the other two: it pulls less weight.

The screens are made of a heavy, mold-resistant synthetic fabric which offers trong resistance against strong winds and debris projections. The screens are also situated inside the pool cage, which reduces the need for even heavier fabric.

We installed this hurricane screen in a residence located in Lutz, FL. The challenge faced by the owners was that their patio was completely exposed to wind and rain, as the back of their home faces large expanse of land without any wind-cutting features (like a tree line, or a mound on a golf course). As we all know, winds accelerate on flat surfaces, and when they reach a certain velocity and power, they carry debris at great speed over long stretches of land.

The other challenge we faced was to blend the screen in a home sitting in an HOA. HOAs have strict rules on the outward appearance of your home and your plot of land, and you can’t always install any hurricane screen in any color that you please; fortunately, this home had dark window frames, and the model of retractable screen we recommended to the owners matched the color of the home. Installed flush with the wall line, it perfectly integrates the look of the home, as if the latter was originally built with the screen.
